The Albany, Deptford
The Deptford Fund was set up in 1894 by the Duchess of Albany to address poverty in Deptford. Probably the biggest charitable fund in Deptford, it aimed to improve the plight of local people and opened the doors of The Albany Institute in 1899.
The Albany, Deptford has been supporting the people of Deptford for over 125 years and is now a registered charity and social enterprise. While its core funding comes from the Arts Council England and Lewisham Council, it earns 60% of its own income which is reinvested in its own programmes. A hub for creative enterprise, it’s a performing arts centre with a long history supporting the Deptford community.
Initiatives it’s involved in include the Family Arts Campaign, which aims to increase families’ engagement with arts and culture, and Fun Palaces, which campaigns for cultural democracy.
Facilities within the Albany, Deptford include four performance spaces, a café bar, meeting rooms, a community garden, rehearsal rooms, and office space for local creative or community businesses.
It also works in partnership with Lewisham and Southwark councils to manage the Deptford Lounge and Canada Water Theatre respectively.
It’s also an award winning charity. In Spring 2017, it was awarded the first Hearts for Arts award from the National campaign for the Arts for its contribution to social cohesion in Lewisham. Among other awards, it received the accolade of Best Social Enterprise at the Mayor of Lewisham Business Awards 2017 and, in 2018, the London Youth Award for arts and culture for Love2Dance..
If music and comedy are more your thing, The Albany Deptford is working hard to get the venue back on London’s gig map. It’s got an enviable history dating back to the 70s and 80s. From acts like Dire Straits performing at the Albany Empire to 1980s legends such as Squeeze, Elvis Costello and Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer, it’s no stranger to big names, so the return of their gigs is a very exciting prospect!
